Privacy statement

Who we are

Dark Future (dark-future.com) is a non-commercial, fan-made browser game, currently in beta. We decide how the personal data described below is handled. For any privacy question or request, email info@requr.nl.

What we collect

  • Account details — your username, email address and password. Passwords are stored only as a salted hash, so we never see or keep the password itself.
  • Technical data — your IP address, browser user-agent and a session record, kept so you stay logged in and so we can spot abuse.
  • Things you upload or write — your profile text, avatar image, crew name and crew banner, private messages, forum threads and crew chat.
  • Gameplay data — your character's rank, money, city and stats, plus the record of what you do in the game, such as crimes, trades and attacks.
  • Push tokens — if you switch on notifications in the mobile app, that device's push token and platform (iOS, Android or web).

Why we use it

  • To run the game and your account — this is necessary to provide the service you signed up for.
  • To keep the game fair and secure — IP addresses and rate limits help us stop brute-force logins, mass sign-ups and multi-accounting. This is our legitimate interest.
  • To email you — account email such as password resets, and two-factor login codes for administrators.

We do not use your data for advertising, profiling or automated decision-making, and we never sell it.

What other players can see

Some information is public by design: your username, rank, city, profile text, avatar, crew membership and crew banner, and anything you post on the forums or in crew chat. Avatars and crew banners are served from public web addresses so they load in both the browser and the mobile app. Please don't put anything private in them.

Cookies

We set a session cookie so the site can keep you logged in, and a "remember me" cookie if you choose that option. Both are strictly necessary for the site to work.

We also use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used. It sets its own cookies and shares data with Google. You can block it using your browser's privacy settings or an ad blocker.

Who else handles your data

We keep the number of third parties as small as possible. Our hosting provider and its content delivery network process data on our behalf purely in order to serve the site. If you enable push notifications in the mobile app, your device token is passed to Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) so the notification can be delivered.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. To have your account and everything attached to it erased, email info@requr.nl and we will remove it. Note that ending your character inside the game is not the same thing: it kills off that character but keeps your account so you can start again. Because Dark Future is still in beta, the game world is occasionally reset, which clears gameplay data.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you can ask us for a copy of your data, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to how we use it, or receive it in a portable form. Email info@requr.nl and we will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we handle your request, you can complain to your national data protection authority — in the Netherlands, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
